At the top of The Mathias Way triad, pointing forward, is The Future. This triad addresses the desired long-term state of the organization—what it could and should become.  At the core of The Future is Our People, surrounded by Our Philosophy and Our Focus, with Our Value leading the way.

Our People

 Our People are at the heart of what our organization is currently, but more importantly, what it will be in The Future.  At the core of each person, we look for the quality of Individuality.  Our future depends on team members and citizens who are self-reliant and who have a strong sense of their own uniqueness. 

Individuality is  supported by Loyalty and Resilience. Character strengths are formed through successfully meeting life's challenges and making correct choices based on a strong set of values.  They are also enhanced by blending with other elements in The Culture triad.

Loyalty embodies several aspects: a continuing commitment to one’s sense of individuality  and the organizational mission. Ideally, there should be alignment between the two. It also means an unfaltering commitment to the welfare of one’s team mates, as well as other significant individuals.  Resilience is the ability to bounce back quickly from setbacks and to remain flexible in dealing with life's challenges--physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

At the apex of this triad is a sense of Meaningful Purpose--deep and abiding sense of Purpose, a self-knowledge of one’s reason for being. This sense of Purpose extends beyond the person's individual mission to connect with a larger cause.

While everything written here about Our People has been directed at the individual level, the concepts can also extend to the work unit and organizational levels.

Our Philosophy

At the core of Our Philosophy for The Future is Win-Win-Win. This means that in whatever dealings we have with others – whether individuals, work units or other organizations – the intent is to search for a solution in which as many parties as possible will benefit. A solution’s success is proportional to the number of parties who win as a result.

Win-Win-Win is supported by Perseverance and Optimism.  Perseverance means to continue on a chosen path despite obstacles and hardships, while Optimism is a belief in the abundance of the Universe, in unlimited opportunities, and that, ultimately, good prevails.

At the apex of this triad, pointing forward, is a philosophy of Excellence. This is the belief in the value of continuously striving to be the best we can possibly be—whatever our role—as individuals and organizations.

Our Focus

At the core of Our Focus is Profitability. Obviously, if the organization is not able to achieve a positive balance between revenues and expenses, it won’t endure for long.

Profitability is enhanced by a focus on Sustainability—that is, a mode of managing that emphasizes optimizing resources for continuous operation. At the same time, Our Focus also includes Growth/Change, which often must be done in order to achieve Profitability and Sustainability. For that reason, we view change as a positive that should be welcomed and embraced.
 
At the apex of Our Focus is New Products and Services. An organization’s focus on Sustainability and Growth/Change will drive New Products and Services, which, in turn, drives continued Profitability.

Our Value

Our Value speaks to how companies will be valued in the future over and above the traditional accounting methods.  At the core of Our Value is The Brand, which is the company’s name, trademark, or identity in the industry.

The Brand is supported by The Roadmap and The Reputation. The Roadmap is the organization’s vision for maximizing its brand identity and the long-term plan for its achievement. The Reputation is an articulation of how the company would like to be known by others in the community, a statement of its corporate citizenship.

The Story, which is at the point of Our Value, is a key element.  It not only is at the apex of Our Value, but it is also at the apex of The Future triad.  This makes The Story the ultimate apex of the entire Way.  The Story is not just an encapsulation of the company’s brand identity, vision, accomplishments and reputation, but also captures a sense of the company’s history. From this history, The Story highlights timeless themes--such that the past becomes the future.

This is why The Story points forward, leading The Way back into the next iteration of The Business, The Culture, The System, and The Future.
